Founding of the ASSH

In 1945, Sterling Bunnell, MD, planted the idea with colleagues for creating a society for hand surgery. On January 20, 1946, Bunnell and mostly military surgeons working in the specialty of hand surgery met at the Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons meeting in Chicago to form the ASSH. These thirty-five surgeons, most of whom worked at the Army hospital hand centers, were designated as founding members. The ASSH was later incorporated in January 1947.
